Have any questions about interviewing with us? Need help creating or accessing your GD applicant profile?
We’ve got the answers.
Sometimes a recruiter may invite you to an informal chat. This is usually a short phone or video call to learn more about your experience and to discuss how your skills align with the role you’ve applied for.
As part of our interview process we have both virtual and in-person interviews, in most cases your first interview will be held virtually with a in-person interview to follow at a later date.
For virtual interviews, please try to find a quiet space where you can speak without interruptions, ensure you have a reliable internet connection and any equipment you may need, and test the meeting link in advance. The recruitment team will send the link to you before the interview. We also appreciate that technical issues can sometimes occur, whether on your side or ours, so please do not worry if this happens. We will work with you to resolve any problems and ensure you have the opportunity to complete your interview.
We use Microsoft Teams for our virtual interviews.
Not a problem, simply contact recruitment@gd-ms.uk (Mission Systems) or recruitment@gdlsuk.com (Land Systems) with what you require and we will work with you to ensure those needs are met.
We will conduct up to two interviews. Of course, the number may vary depending on the role, specialty, and seniority.
The email you receive from a recruiter will mention who will be conducting the interview, rest assured we will let you know ahead of time.
The typical length per interview is about one hour.
Possibly, it depends on the role. For example, if you interview for a technical role, we may ask you to complete a technical assessment or case study. We will provide you more details when scheduling your interview.
If you are successful at the interview stage, we will reach out afterwards and request two references. Please ensure at least one of those references is a current or former supervisor/manager.
We try to make a decision within a timely manner. Regardless, we will keep you updated via email. After all, you’ve spent a lot of time and effort throughout the application and interview process. We also encourage you to reach out to us any time for updates.
As part of your interview we will ask a mix of questions including competency and role specific questions, some questions about your previous experience and give you the opportunity to ask the interview panel questions. Some examples of questions we may ask include:
Please tell us about yourself and your career to date.
Tell us about a successful project/programme you were involved in, what was your role and what did you learn?
Describe a time where you identified an issue before it became a bigger problem.
Tell us about a time where you had multiple priorities competing for your attention.
How do you manage multiple pieces of work, and what tools do you use?
Describe a situation were you had to learn a new skill quickly.
Give us an example where you challenged an existing way of working, what was the outcome?
You may not be asked these exact questions, these are some examples to help you prepare.
Applying for a technical job such as a software or systems engineer? In addition to general questions, you may also be asked:
Can you explain a few significant differences between the C++ and Java programming languages?
Name a project you had a significant role on, that you can discuss in detail.
What was the system design/architecture? What was the problem you had with this system, and how did you fix it?
How much reuse do you get out of the code you develop?
Explain a time when you were able to improve upon the design that was originally requested.
No. If you require a security clearance for the job, we will make arrangements for you.
Our interviews help us understand your unique strengths, decision-making style, and communication abilities. To maintain fairness, integrity, and authenticity in our hiring process, we ask that candidates do not use any form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools during interviews.
This applies to:
• Live interview responses (video, phone, or in-person).
• Written assessments completed during or in preparation for the interview session.
• Any portion of the process where you are expected to provide your own thoughts, examples, or ideas in real time.
If you have any accessibility needs or require specific accommodations, please let us know in advance at recruitment@gd-ms.uk or recruitment@gdlsuk.com so we can support you.
