Meet George – Release train engineer

Can you tell us about your career background?

My background is systems engineering – I spent three years within JSIB, moving to the EvO project as a scrum master for both IMS product teams, and then the release train engineer (RTE) for the Oak ART. I left the Company to take on a contractor role, and due to home commitments and wanting more stability, I returned to the Company in April 2020 to continue the same RTE role within the Oak ART. It was nice to come back to see familiar faces and continue with the challenges that the role offers.

Tell us about your role on EvO.

My role is quite unique as it facilitates the ART events such as PI Planning and assists with the delivery of the plan for the programme increments within OAK ART, leading and coaching the scrum masters within each OAK ART team and removing any impediments. The role is interesting and there’s always a lot going on from all different directions, which I enjoy. Working on EvO has been a good challenge and that’s what keeps me on my toes and keeps it exciting!

Working on a scaled Agile programme means there is more transparency for all, including the customer. Working in sprints and increments allows the development, and my role, to be more reactive within the ART. I believe it is an advantageous way of working, as you can see any issues or challenges and resolve them with iterative planning.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

Due to the nature of my role, I get to talk to a lot of people – and the work is varied. It’s also great that I have a group of graduates in my team – so it’s a privilege to act as their mentor and see them develop and progress.

General Dynamics UK is now recruiting for a number of exciting roles. Check out our opportunities here.
