Meet Joshua – software engineer
Tell us a little about your role and what you enjoy most.
I started with the EvO team as a software engineer in January, joining the IMS team. I am currently helping to develop the data management side using Java. The opportunity to use Java was what attracted me to the role – it’s something I hadn’t done since university and it was a new language I wanted to learn! Although I had little experience using Java, the Company was happy to train me and I was given the opportunity to learn whilst doing the role.
Why did you choose to work for General Dynamics?
I visited Oakdale during my placement year at university as part of my leadership and management course with ESTnet. The scheme allowed students to complete the training and visit engineering organisations in South Wales as an opportunity to learn more about the business and network. The most exciting part during my visit was looking at the virtual reality software being developed – a particular interest as I did a course on video game development. I have a relative who works for the Ministry of Defence, so hearing positive stories about the Company and the opportunities for career development encouraged me to look for a role.
What do you enjoy the most?
Lockdown has helped me to reflect. As I do game development in my spare time, I’ve noticed that I’m quite inquisitive and when working on one project, I’m interested by the things I see around me.
