Spotlight: Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of women throughout history. Read about some of the talented women who are making history and are an integral part of our team, driving innovation and excellence every day.

Katy

Katy is a Production Technician and has been with the company for 38 years.

First job: I worked for TFG Reprographics firm for two years after leaving school.

Motivation at work: The team of people that I work with and knowing that what I do helps other people do their job.

Career advice to women: Believe in yourself, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Caz

Caz is a Lead Engineer and has been with the company for 16 years.

First job: Sponsored trainee Software Engineer at BAE Systems (Rochester) – whilst studying for my degree.

Motivation at work: The people I work with every day and the success we see as a result of our hard work. It is not always easy, problems do arise, but there is always a solution if you work together.

Career advice to women: Believe in yourself and your abilities. You can accomplish whatever you put your mind to.

Clare

Clare is a Bid Manager and has been with the company for eight years.

First job: During school and college I was a homeworker assembling greetings cards and Christmas crackers. Patience was a necessity!

Motivation at work: I am motivated by the variety of opportunities I am afforded within my role and the support I receive to better myself through training courses, secondments, and different tasks. I love the diversity of my role and the wide range of people and functions that I get to work with throughout the business. No two days are the same.

Working on bids, big or small, sometimes with multiple people working on numerous documents, across multiple countries and businesses, gets the adrenaline going and seeing everything come together as we near the submission date drives me. I also enjoy motivating others, helping them to grow and develop on bids and within my functional team.

Career advice to women: Follow your dreams and don’t be afraid of a challenge. Everything is possible if you set your mind to it and put in the hard work. Seek out opportunities and take them head-on. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will be your biggest learning curve and the most rewarding of things you do.

Frances

Frances is a Principal Software Engineer and has been with the company for 35 years.

First job: I was employed at BAE Systems (formerly GEC Avionics) for a few years as a software engineer, during which time I successfully completed a HND in Computer Studies.

Motivation at work: I’m motivated by the challenges on a programme and working with a team to successfully achieve the end goals.

Career advice to women: It’s important for Women to go along to career fairs and other events to understand what opportunities are out there. They should look at all aspects and try a few things even if they don’t work out.
