Meet Sarah – Business development director

Sarah’s career in the defence industry spans over two decades and is marked by continuous growth. From her early days in market research, she’s followed a path defined by curiosity and adaptability to reach her role in shaping strategic growth at General Dynamics UK.

Sarah’s journey in defence began with BAE Systems in market analysis – a role that sparked her interest in strategy. “I didn’t set out to build a career in defence,” she admits, “but I was drawn to the strategic nature of the work – how it shaped policy, technology, and ultimately lives.”

As she gained exposure to customer dynamics and organisational challenges, her opportunities expanded, leading her into customer-focussed and strategic roles. “Starting small gave me perspective,” she reflects. “It taught me how every role, no matter the size, contributes to the bigger mission.”

Over time, she’s honed her technical and commercial skills and her ability to collaborate across diverse teams, and navigate high-pressure environments.

This experience paved the way for Sarah’s role as Director of Business Development at General Dynamics Mission Systems–UK, where she now helps shape the future of Tactical Communication and Information Systems (TacCIS) for the British Army and allied forces worldwide. Today, her work delivers sovereign capability empowering the warfighter to successfully complete their missions.

“The work we do is more than just building systems – it directly contributes to national security and resilience. That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Sarah describes speaking at the Royal United Service’s Institute (RUSI) Land Warfare Conference in 2023 as a defining moment in her career. “Speaking at that level – in front of government, senior military personnel, industry, press, and even my own colleagues – challenged me on every front in terms of preparation and confidence. But it also reinforced that I have a voice that matters.”

It’s that same voice she now uses to shape how General Dynamics shows up in the industry, and how she leads her team internally. For Sarah, leadership is about creating space – space to grow, ask questions, and learn through experience. Her approach is grounded in kindness and communication, underpinned by a belief that strong relationships drive stronger results.

Alongside delivering impact through capability, Sarah finds fulfilment in mentoring and supporting others – especially women navigating careers in defence. “When I started out, the sector was overwhelmingly male dominated. I learned to embrace the fact that I looked, sounded, and led differently. Those differences are strengths, not barriers.”

Now, Sarah is focused on making those strengths more visible. She champions visibility, mentorship, and diverse perspectives – believing they are essential to unlocking innovation and attracting the next generation of talent.

“To build a better defence industry, we need people who think differently, challenge norms, and feel seen.”

Sarah has one simple message to those considering a career in defence: “Apply. Explore. Don’t be afraid to pivot. Ask questions and make your goals known. There’s no single route into this industry – but there are endless ways to grow once you’re here.”
