Meet Scott – Principal Systems Engineer (System Design)

Scott joined General Dynamics Mission Systems–United Kingdom (GDMS–UK) more than eight years ago as a graduate systems engineer, bringing a mathematics background and a strong appetite for applied problem‑solving. After completing an undergraduate degree and a master’s in mathematics, he was drawn to engineering as a way to translate abstract thinking into practical capability with real‑world impact.

“Maths opens up a lot of doors,” Scott explains. “For me, systems engineering offered a way to apply that thinking to something tangible – work with a clear purpose.”

Defence stood out as an environment where technical decisions carried weight, and where engineering outcomes directly supported those who rely on them. When Scott spotted GDMS–UK’s graduate scheme, he saw an opportunity to put his skills to work in a meaningful way.

The transition from academia to industry proved to be a natural progression. “Colleagues were incredibly supportive from day one, and there was time to get up to speed properly. And finishing your workday knowing you’re done for the evening – that was a revelation after five years of studying.”

Scott’s first role placed him at the heart of a key British Army communications programme, working as a Systems Integration and Test engineer, with the graduate scheme giving Scott early exposure to current defence programmes. From the outset, his work was hands-on and closely connected to the end user. “As a graduate, I was running acceptance tests directly with the customer,” he says. “You quickly learn what really matters to the people using the system.”

As his experience developed, so did the scope of his responsibilities. Scott moved into more design-focused roles, contributing to large-scale communications systems and travelling between UK, US and Canada. Time spent working across international sites, engaging with the armed forces, and supporting demonstrations broadened his perspective. “That’s where my mindset shifted,” he explains. “I moved from understanding systems to designing them.”

A defining moment in that transition came through General Dynamics Mission Systems’ Systems Engineering Architect Leadership (SEAL) Programme. Over 18 months, Scott balanced his full‑time engineering role with advanced academic study at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, alongside leadership development and enterprise‑level projects.

“The experience was intense and incredibly rewarding,” Scott says. “SEAL accelerated my development – technically, professionally, and personally.” The programme blended academic rigour with leadership exposure and practical application, giving participants the opportunity to pursue initiatives that delivered tangible improvements for the business.

“You’re encouraged to take ownership, explore ideas, and follow them through.”

Now a Principal Systems Engineer (System Design), he says trust has been a constant throughout his career here.

“If you want to run with something, you’re given the space to do it,” he says. “And if you need support, people have your back. It’s very much what you make of it.”

Alongside the technical challenge, Scott values the flexibility built into working life. He works a compressed nine‑day fortnight, often using his extra day off to get away for a long weekend or simply enjoy a quieter day while everyone else is at work. “It really gives you the space and time to reset,” he says.

Outside engineering, Scott’s interests reflect that balance. He plays competitive pool in a local league and makes the most of the Welsh outdoors when the weather cooperates.

And then there’s the baking – an unexpected skill. Entering a colleague bake sale fundraiser on a whim, Scott walked away with the first-place award for his coffee and walnut cake. “That was as much a surprise to me as anyone else,” he laughs.

For those looking for a career in engineering, Scott’s advice is straightforward. “General Dynamics will invest in you,” he says. “If you’re curious and willing to take on responsibility, there’s real scope to grow here. You’re encouraged to drive your own development – and supported when you do.”
