Meet Joshua, a Senior Software Engineer with our Mission Systems team.

Joshua grew up dreaming of soaring the skies as a pilot, but everything changed when he found out he needed prescription glasses in college.

“My plans went out the window,” he recalls. Yet, instead of completely changing course, Joshua found himself pursuing what he calls the “next best thing” – an opportunity to work on some of the platforms he had once envisioned flying.

Soon after joining General Dynamics through our Mission Systems graduate scheme, Joshua learned about our reservist policy and our ongoing commitment to the Armed Forces community as original signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant. He then crossed paths with a serving reservist and his wheels started to turn.

It was not long after that fateful meeting that Joshua began the enrolment process to join the Royal Air Force (RAF) Reserves.

His military service has given him a new perspective that informs his work at General Dynamics – both from a technical standpoint and how he shows up as a leader.

“Throughout my time in the Reserves, I’ve learned some valuable lessons: keeping calm under pressure during demanding training exercises, exercising self-discipline in balancing dual careers, and growing as a leader by collaborating with teammates with different backgrounds and perspectives.”

Joshua continues to make a meaningful impact within the Armed Forces community – both in his role as a reservist and as an engineer that drives innovation to provide next-generation defence technology. His story serves as a powerful reminder that there is always more than one way to pursue your passion.
